Q. We are refinishing a basement and need to decide on flooring. Room is a 40 x 40 with concrete base. Very dry but did install a sump pump as a precaution. Room will be a TV/game room as well as a laundry area. Trying to decide between carpet/laminate floor. Any pearls of wisdom?

A. One pearl of wisdom: No carpet or laminate floor, neither of which will do below grade, even in a dry area. My other pearl is to apply large ceramic tiles with a thin-set mortar. Then get area rugs, which can be removed and cleaned if ever they get wet.
