I've been on a letter-writing kick lately.
So, in order to expend some of the nervous energy I have during this taper-time, I figured what the heck, I'll write myself a letter, too.
Wow. Look at you. You're basically a different person: And in more than just the physical ways.
You hated running.
You didn't think you'd ever be able to run a mile without gasping for air.
You thought people who ran more than a mile were just really into pain or something.
You thought you'd never be one of those people.
You were incredibly jealous.
And incredibly wrong.
So you started. One day you made up your mind that, gosh darn it, you wanted to see what it felt like to really run.
You hated it.
You hated every single step.
You wondered why the heck you thought this was a good idea and then you remembered you don't fail.
So you told yourself to give it another try tomorrow.
And the next day when you hated it? You told yourself the same thing: just one more run.
You've been going for "just one more day" for more than a year now.
I think it's safe to assume you actually may even *enjoy* running.
When you decide to do something you do it. That trait in you has not changed in the last year. Well, OK, maybe it's gotten a smidge stronger.
You are stubborn and determined and in this case, it's helping you.
So, keep going.
When you wonder on Sunday why the heck you thought this marathon was a good idea tell yourself to go for just one more mile.
It doesn't matter how many times you have to tell yourself to just run that one more mile: as long as you do it.
Because if there is one thing you have learned over the course of running for the last year and a half, it's that you can totally run a mile now.
And it shocks the hell out of your every day that you can.
So my advice for your first (but definitely not your last) marathon?
Enjoy every stride. We won't tell anyone that somewhere along the lines running became fun.
We promise. Lips are sealed.
Go kick ass: One mile at a time.
