The act of getting somewhere

I'm a digger.

As in, if you decide you're going to be friends with me, I will dig in and try like heck to get to know you. I like to feel like I'm getting somewhere with a person every day: Either learning something new, or discussing a new point of view, or learning something about myself through them.

It strikes me that I am the same way when it comes to running. I like the feeling that I am getting somewhere.


When I started running, I forced myself to not expect to be the best or fastest right away (something that just about killed my perfectionist tendencies).

Instead, progress had to be small and marked. I couldn't let myself get frustrated. Remember to breathe. Remember to try a route more than once to compare my progress on the same path I ran the week or day before.

Just like writing: If you go over a passage you've written enough times, eventually all the bumps are smoothed out and the once rocky, unstable footing you had becomes steady, sure, and even.

Lately, I've been digging more and more -- only it's mostly with myself instead of with others (I am, after all, training for a marathon, which I feel like requires a lot of mental prep work).

So, for the next few weeks I'm going to try running one of my favorite paths almost exclusively to feel like I'm getting somewhere in terms of progress.

It is tough work smoothing out the bumps. But as you know, that doesn't mean I will shy away from them. Instead, I'll tackle one small obstacle at a time.
