Why I run version 2.0

It had been one of those weeks at work when, just when you think you finally have everything under control, another piece of breaking news happens (in this case, focusing on the local flu outbreak).

For me, when breaking news happens in my job, I crank into overdrive. Alerts have to be sent out, multiple web pages need to be updated. I have to push our important information out on social media channels and on our radio station ... I have to do it all accurately and in a timely manner.

Breaking news is just one of the many reasons I absolutely love my job: It keeps me on my toes, and I'm never bored. It's also one of the most exhausting parts of my work. This brings me to why I run ...

Mid-week I put out a call to my friends asking if someone, (anyone!) wanted to run with me so I could clear my mind. I made a plan early in the week in my head, and as part of my training schedule, that I would run about four miles Saturday. And while I've been working steadily to improve my 5K pace, I knew if I ran with a friend I wasn't going to be setting any personal records.


My run this weekend was less about speed or logging miles and more about why I love running: It gets me out of my own head. It gives me space to breathe. It forces me to just focus on doing one task and one task only.

When I'm running, I can't think about my growing to-do list at work, what I'm cooking for dinner, or even what training plans I have in store for my #ProjectAdam buddies.

When running, especially with a friend, all I can think about is putting one foot in front of the other, and whether or not I can chat and run at the same time without falling (I'm the klutziest person you know ... I promise).

The friend I ran with, Dr. Sherry Pagoto, has run far more races than I, and been a runner for longer, too (she's running the Chicago marathon for a third time this year), but my snail's pace didn't matter to her. We were just two runners out on a misty morning gabbing away. Was it slower than my normal pace? Sure. It was also probably one of the best runs I've had. Hands down.

I run because I can. And so can my friends.
