The next big thing

Now that I've run 13.1 miles, naturally a marathon comes next right?

Not so fast. Back up the truck.

I'm still learning how to make these short legs of mine move in an efficient manner.

But I can't hang out here in what I've dubbed "exercise limbo" for much longer. "Exercise limbo" to me is that space where you just keep on keeping on because you don't know what you should do next, or know quite how to do it.

You all have been great by offering suggestions; Try a marathon, do a sprint triathlon, try a "warrior dash."

The truth is, I want to get better at this running thing.

So what am I doing now? I'm going back to the beginning.

I plan to sign up for a 5K in May -- the same 5K that was my very first way back when I started this running thing.

It may sound silly to get into a "training" mindset now, many months away from when the race will actually take place. But, to me, this is important.

Sure, I've run a half marathon and a 10K, but this race will be the one I care about the most. It will be the truest measure of how far (or not) I've come. Will I beat my own 5K pace from last year? If so, by how much?

I haven't set those kinds of goals yet, but I plan to. It seems fitting that before I try tackling something bigger -- or in this case longer -- that I should really focus on mastering what I've already conquered.

Starting today, I'm in training again -- if for no other reason than to really get a sense of how I'm doing at trying to figure out this whole running thing.

I do have larger goals. But for right now, this one seems to be the one for me.
