NESN's Tom Caron: 'I get cranky' without exercise

With the Run to Home Base 9K just a few days away now, NESN's Tom Caron has been ramping up his training in hopes of finishing strong and beating colleague Jenny Dell. Caron is wearing a Fitbit to track his steps while he trains.

Here's my latest Q&A with him to check in on his progress:

Q. How many steps are you averaging a day?

A. About 13,000. I really do feel pressure to walk/run more with the thing (the Fitbit) clipped onto my side. So I think I’ve been working out more because of it … and that’s a good thing!

Q. How is the training going? Do you feel ready?

A. I think so! Since I am a recreational runner, and nothing more, I don’t really have any “training” schedule in mind. But I’ve run the last three days – from the full 5.4 miles to a 5K the next day, and 4 miles the following day. I think I need to back off a little the last couple of days, but because I don’t want to feel the wrath of the Fitbit’s scorn. I will go for a good walk to keep moving! My dog loves the Fitbit – she’s never seen me want to take her for so many walks!

Q. Have you set a step goal for yourself each day?

A. I was going for the 10,000 steps … and have been well over that each day. So I guess I’ll ramp it up to 12,000 as a goal. But if I fall short, I’ll say it was 10,000 all along.

Q. What exercise have you done today?

A. I ran four miles with my friend John. I was going to mail it in with a short walk, but he pulled me back out on the track. I think I was slowing him down, but at least I never made him stop!

Q. What was on your playlist?

A. “Cinema” – the Skrillex remix, and “State of Massachusetts” by the Dropkick Murphys

Q. What’s your favorite type of exercise?

A. Running. It’s the one time where I listen to my music, as loud as I want, and can sort out my thoughts. I’m certainly no competitive runner, but if I don’t get out and move at least once every other day I can feel it. So can the people around me … I get CRANKY!
