It's Italian for counter service, and it's the name of Barbara Lynch's second Fort Point venture. It's expected to open in mid-November. And yes, the food at Sportello will be Italian, too: simple, market-driven soups, salads, pastas, and desserts. (The press release mentions chicken vegetable soup with caraway gnocchi and tagliatelle Bolognese.) The space will be dominated by a long, white counter that seats about 30. There will be a bakery with breads and pastries, prepared sandwiches, and, of course, coffee. Sportello will also sell the likes of house-made chocolate bars and ... Christine Ferber jams.
If you know these jams, you'll be as excited as I am. They come in the most amazing flavors: apricot and vanilla, black cherry with pinot noir, Alsatian plum. (Ferber is Alsatian.) They have been impossible to find in Boston; no longer.
I'm curious to see how Sportello and the nearby Flour wind up splitting the lunch crowd. Maybe the lunchtime lines at Flour will finally settle down a bit.
