New King Fung Garden: Divey BYOB In Chinatown

The entrance to my office is about 50 feet from this place, and before last week, the thought of dining there never crossed my mind. I didn't even realize it was a working restaurant until I was invited for lunch by a co-worker. After two visits and some research, I now realize this place has been a Boston cult favorite since the 90's. Apparently I'm a little late on this one. So for the people that have been eating at New King Fung Garden for years, take this as a reminder of its glory. For those of you who haven't heard of it, get excited, because you have a new restaurant to try that's not only fun, cheap and unique -- it's BYOB too, which is reason enough to check it out.


It's the definition of a divey hole-in-the-wall. There are only 5 tables in the whole place (one of which blocks the doorway, you have to move it to fit into the booth) and the interior looks more like someone's kitchen than a restaurant. It feels a little sketchy at first, but one look at the food on the tables around you and it's immediately obvious you're in a good spot.


Start with the scallion pancakes. They're perfect. Thicker than other scallion pancakes I've had, the layers of dough in the middle are fluffy and the outside skin is crispy.


The Amazing Chicken is, in fact, amazing. It's a chicken and vegetable dish served with a secret sauce that combines the flavors of soy sauce, hoisin sauce and Chinese spices. Even if you finish eating the chicken and vegetables, keep the plate of sauce at the table to dip everything else in -- dumplings, pork buns, everything.


Pork Dumplings are a must at any Chinese restaurant and King Fung's are more than satisfying. The Pork on the inside tastes like it was either cooked or marinated in the dumpling sauce beforehand, giving it a deeper and more savory flavor than most pork dumplings.


The House Fried Rice, which includes chicken, pork and shrimp, comes in a heaping portion that serves as the perfect compliment to the Amazing Chicken.


The Pork Buns were not the bao bun texture I was expecting, but they were delicious nonetheless. I don't recommend ordering the buns and the dumplings (unless you're starving, in which case go for it), they were very similar in both flavor and texture.

Head over to New King Fung Garden next time you're in Chinatown and looking for a new, fun, and slightly bizarre experience. You'll be sure to have at least a few days of leftovers and a somewhat religious experience when you bite into the scallion pancakes.
