The Food pages' annual report on 50 wines for $12 and under is ready for the press. See results in Wednesday's paper or at as early as 4p.m. Tuesday.

If the past is any guide, wines chosen as top picks by our panel will quickly be in high demand.

We ask retailers who nominate wines for the event to suggest only those with reasonable distribution in the state. Even so, shop owners don't get advance notice of the results and will themselves be scrambling to cop a few cases of the top wines for their customers.

Since the process of contacting distributors and taking delivery can take a few days, readers with a bit of patience are most likely to be rewarded.

The big surprises this year? A flight of German and Austrian wines that wowed the panel.
