Another Inglenook moment
We've mentioned Inglenook a couple of times recently (see Inglenook at Auction and The name game or something more? ), so yesterday when Peter Tryba of Marty's Fine Wines in Newton mentioned he had recently tasted a 1962 Inglenook Napa Valley Gamay with a friend we were eager to hear all about it.
The wine had been bought at auction for $40, and apparently the pair didn't hold out a lot of hope for it. Here are Peter's surprising notes:
At first the wine smelled only of freshly laid cement. Over the next hour aromas of dried rose petals, tobacco, and old paper emerged. Flavors of dry cherry and tobacco leaf eventually came out of hiding to thrill us. Kudos to the Inglenook of old for creating a wine of purity, balance, and class.
Maybe the motto for the revived Inglenook brand should be "Backward and Upward."
