Magic Hat has brought back Hocus Pocus, a beer the Vermont brewery last brewed in 2008. The return was dictated by popular vote, and Hocus Pocus beat out seven other finalists for the right to return to store shelves.
The popular vote part of this is not a coincidence. Hocus Pocus will appear as part of Magic Hat's "Participation" pack, an election-themed 12-pack of beer that is on store shelves now. Also included in the pack is No.9, h.I.P.A., and Hex, Magic Hat's "Ourtoberfest" release.
The release is done in conjunction with Head Count. Magic Hat encourages people to vote, and the thought is that seeing a red, white, and blue variety pack on the shelf might serve as a reminder of that. You can win a trip to New York City for a "Participation Party" on Nov. 5.
I cracked open the Hocus Pocus, a beer I remember from a few years ago. This is a sessionable summer beer, with 13 IBUs and an ABV of 4.5 percent. There's a nice citrus smell to the beer. Hints of lemon flavor the beer, which is lighter than I remember. Not much complexity, but a nice refreshing beer.
