Part of what I plan to do in the blog is keep you informed of beer events around Boston. A good one happens to be coming up next weekend.

The folks at are hosting their first festival, and it's dedicated to saisons. For the beer newbies, a saison is a farmhouse ale that's become chic in the world of beer. The classic example is Belgium's Saison Dupont, while two great American examples are Ommegang Brewery's Hennepin and Jack D'or from Pretty Things. The beers tend to be complex, spicy, and fairly dry, with just a hint of sweetness. They can also be sour, and they're refreshing.

The Drink Craft Beer Summerfest will be held July 13 and 14 and will showcase more than 70 beers from 25 New England craft brewers. According to site co-founder Jeff Wharton, many brewers are making beers just for this festival, including Harpoon, Night Shift, Wormtown, Downeast Cider House, John Harvard's in Cambridge.

Some standout beers to look for at the event:

-- Mystic Brewing is bringing the fest beer, a Farmhouse Ale using yeast they harvested and isolated locally, to showcase the New England terroir.
-- High & Mighty's Lucky Pierre, a soured version of their Pas de Dieux Saison
-- Jack's Abby Biere de Garde Rye Lager, a lager version of the farmhouse ale
--John Harvard's British East India Company's Tonic, a gin-and-tonic inspired sour saison
-- Notch Brewing's saison fermented with Brettanomyces
-- A Peak Organic mystery beer
-- Slumbrew's Flower Envy saison, which wasn't supposed to be brewed and released for another year.

All of the information for the festival, including ticket information and session times, can be found here.
