backlash declaration 002.jpgThe Belgian IPA style is becoming more and more popular, and I'm not complaining: It happens to be a favorite of mine. Declaration, the newest offering from Backlash Beer Co. of Boston (though the owners brew in Holyoke), is a phenomenal Belgian-style India pale ale.

Hazy orange, the beer has a huge, foaming, off-white head that becomes lumpy as it dissipates. The scents range from passion fruit and mango to banana, pine, and clove, as though this were a mashup of a light Belgian ale and a double IPA. A sip: Whoa! Declaration is indeed a declaration. It is one assertive beer. A citrus bomb detonates in your mouth. Grapefruit is at the forefront of a profile that's dry and spicy. Superb.

Declaration is 7.2 percent alcohol by volume. A 22-ounce bottle costs about $8.
