Review: Clown Shoes Muffin Top

muffin top 003.jpgBlaecorn Unidragon, which I wrote about two weeks ago, is not the only new beer from Clown Shoes, the quirky brewer based in Ipswich. Now comes Muffin Top.

Muffin Top was intended to be a double version of Tramp Stamp, Clown Shoes' excellent Belgian IPA, but it gradually turned into a hybrid of a Belgian tripel and an India pale ale.

Hazy orange with a soft inch of foam, Muffin Top smells like all kinds of tropical fruit, especially oranges (orange peel was used in the brew). It feels and tastes like a tripel that has been doubled and extreme-hopped. (Can I call it a sextupel? Probably not.) Syrupy and heavy, this beer -- 22 ounces of it anyway -- would be difficult for one person to finish in one sitting, especially given its alcohol content of 10 percent by volume. But I'll gladly give it a try.

Expect the new brews to keep on coming. Clown Shoes plans to introduce 10 new beers in 2012, doubling the number of styles it now produces.
