Raise a glass with Pride

It’s Pride Week in the city, which means that many local bars are toasting the occasion by adding special cocktails to the menu. For those going to the big parade on Saturday, one of these will likely only add to your celebratory mood. But even if you’re not parade-bound, these are worth trying, even at home.


49 Social (49 Temple Place, Boston. 617-338-9600. )

2 ounces rye whiskey

1/4 ounce orgeat syrup

3 kumquats (halved)

dash Demerara bitters

1/4 ounce pear nectar

dash Bittermens Burlesque Bitters

Muddle kumquats, orgeat and simple syrups. Add whiskey, nectar, half an eyedropper of the bitters and ice. Stir and strain into a coupe or martini glass. Serve with candied kumquat slice.

“Magnus Hirshfeld was a late-19th-century gay activist,’’ bartender Elizabeth Powell says of the name behind this light but complex cocktail. “Pre-Nazi Weimar Germany, he and several others were in the process of trying to overturn paragraph 175 which made it illegal to engage in male homosexual acts. They were quite successful until some nut named Hitler managed to change public opinion. Weimar Germany was, in many ways, a free-wheeling time for people, much in the same way Pride is.’’

3/4 ounce Cherry Heering liqueur

1 1/2 ounces Svedka Vanilla Vodka

3/4 ounce Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur

splash of Grenadine

Combine all the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice. Serve straight up in a martini glass. Garnish with three maraschino cherries.

3 ounces Russian Standard Vodka

1 ounce raspberry puree

1 ounce blue curacao

1 ounce papaya puree

3 ounces crushed ice

Divide vodka into six 1/2-ounce portions in separate rocks glasses. (Create layers 1 thru 6 in separate containers before assembling the drinks.) Layer 1 (purple): add 1/4 ounce raspberry puree and 1/4 ounce blue curacao. Layer 2 (blue): add 1/2 ounce blue curacao. Layer 3 (green): add 1/4 ounce papaya puree and 1/4 ounce blue curacao. Layer 4 (yellow): add 1/2 ounce papaya puree. Layer 5 (orange): add 1/4 ounce raspberry puree and 1/4 ounce papaya puree. Layer 6 (red): add 1/2 ounce raspberry puree. Add 1/2 ounce of crushed ice to all layers and stir. Layer 1 through 6 consecutively into a white wine glass using back end of a bar spoon.

“We had a theme in mind of an everyone-coexisting-in-harmony type of deal,’’ says bartender Domingo-Martin Barreres of this labor-intensive, visually brilliant cocktail.

2 ounces SKYY Dragon Fruit Vodka

1 ounce Stella’s dragonberry mix of watermelon, cherry, and strawberry juices

fresh basil

squeeze of lime

Muddle basil with lime. Add vodka and dragonberry mix to a shaker with ice. Strain into martini glass.

“The word ‘dragon’ comes from the Greek root ‘drakeîn’, which means ‘to see clearly,’ ’’ says Stella’s Lucas Rozene of this sweet and tangy punch variation. “The theme for Boston Pride 2011 is equality, and seeing clearly — whether induced by a cocktail or not — is what we all need to do when it comes to accepting people for who they are. Just don’t have too many of these bad boys or you won’t be seeing anything.’’

1 1/2 ounces Creme De Violette

1 1/2 ounces fresh lemon juice

sparkling wine

house made grenadine

Shake ingredients over ice and pour into glass. Top with sparkling wine and 1/2 ounce of grenadine. Cherry garnish.

“Working in the South End for years, we always tried to make vibrant-colored cocktails for Pride,’’ bartender Emma Hollander says of this lavender, citrus, and bubbly cocktail. “We wanted them to be pretty, boozy, and flavorful. Now that I’m celebrating the week in Somerville, I’m bringing the Pride-themed drinks over the river to represent the South End’s most important holiday of the year.’’
