Many of our moms were simple cooks, but they cooked every night. They kept cost in mind and produced hearty dishes they knew pleased their families. When company came, they turned to other recipes, like a cheese ball rolled in nuts, that seem amusingly retro now, but surely delighted guests at the time. And dessert was always homemade. Post World War II moms baked from scratch. They may have trotted out the same sweet treat for every occasion, but it was always fresh from the oven and the house smelled wonderful while you waited. Are we too nostalgic about ordinary dishes? Perhaps. But they really did taste good.
