CARLSBAD, Calif. — Hungry, tired, and still on East Coast time, we had driven from Long Beach to our motel, in Carlsbad, north of San Diego. Carlsbad is famous for LEGOLAND California (hence our visit), not for fine dining. The best dinner option was a fast-food place up the highway. It was what you would expect: pizza and burgers and such. Except that, lurking on the menu, amid the fries and onion rings as a side order, was something I had never seen on a takeout menu: avocado. It cost a buck, I think. Who could resist? Served perfectly ripe, perfectly quartered, it was perfectly delicious.

Welcome to California.
