Skip the carton of eggnog this year. Try these five creative holiday drinks instead.
Five women sit at a bar, chatting about weekend plans, mutual friends, shades of red lipstick. It could easily be an episode of “Sex and the City’’ - except these 20- and 30-somethings aren’t drinking cosmos. They’re sipping cocktails made with Benedictine, St-Germain, green Chartreuse, and eggs. Yes, eggs.
The Boston chapter of Ladies United for the Preservation of the Endangered Cocktails - LUPEC, for short - is mixing up inventive holiday drinks at new Inman Square hot spot Trina’s Starlite Lounge. The charitable cocktail society, which got its start here in 2007, counts star bartenders like Misty Kalkofen of Drink and Joy Richard of Franklin Café among its members, as well as enthusiasts who aren’t in the industry.
“I wanted to be part of a professional organization, so we started our own, around alcohol,’’ said Kirsten Amann, a.k.a. Pink Lady, a freelance writer and publicist who’s also a server at Toro. (Each member has a cocktail-inspired nickname.)
The women get together at least once a month to talk about how cocktails and spirits have played a role in history and feminism. Per LUPEC’s bylaws, these meetings/parties must have a theme; past topics include cocktails in classic cinema, first ladies and their cocktails, and the history of New Orleans. They blog at www.lupecboston.com, too.
“They run the gamut from geeking out about cocktails to women’s history,’’ Amann said. “But we can be silly and gossipy, too.’’
Philanthropy is also part of LUPEC’s mission. Proceeds from the ladies’ first and second editions of the “Little Black Book of Cocktails’’ went to the Friends Place at Dana-Farber and the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans’ Women’s Unit (look for a new edition of the drink recipes book out in 2010) and money raised at a recent Tiki Bash will benefit On the Rise.
We asked LUPEC members to come up with five festive holiday drink recipes for your sipping pleasure. Toast 2010 with Kate Palmer’s bright and bubbly La Verrerie or mix up Amann’s retro Silent Night Punch for your next dinner party or family get-together.
