1. Go ahead and grow a full beard, says Tom Canepa of State Street Barbers in the South End. While goatees and chin-strap beards (like David Ortiz’s precise, jaw-hugging shape) have been popular in the last couple of years, many men today are opting for more coverage.

2. This doesn’t mean stylish guys are wearing a scraggly mess. Canepa likes a natural-looking beard that’s finished “just enough so you don’t look as though you spend time with ZZ Top.” To get this look, trim the beard on top so it doesn’t obscure your cheekbones, and shave from below the jawbone so the neck is clean.

3. Canepa suggests regular trims to keep the length medium-short, and says that if every-three-weeks visits to the barber aren’t in the cards, $45 will get you a decent home clipper.
