25 Most Stylish Bostonians of 2010 -- Katie Noyes
Occupation: A design director for Converse
As design director for a major footwear company, what’s the most annoying or stylistically offensive thing you see people putting on their feet? I really don’t like puffy, big white sneakers. Not the cooler, hip-hop type, but the mall-walker type. I don’t want to offend anybody, but they’re terrible. In Europe, you can always pick out the American tourists because they’re wearing white sneakers.
Have you always been a footwear enthusiast, or were you a creative person who happened to fall into shoe business? The latter. I’m a graphic designer by trade, and a fine artist. I work on the brand design side of Converse. I’m not a footwear designer. I work on all the other things: design for marketing, design for events, and projects like that.
I’m sure you have a closet full of Converse in every size, shape, and color, but when you’re not wearing Converse, what’s your preferred footwear? I really love black boots. I like to wear flats. I wear sneakers sometimes, but I don’t wear sneakers as much as one might think, working for a sneaker company. I prefer a nice little pair of heels or sandals.
Do you get ostracized if you’re not wearing sneakers in the office? Not at all. I obviously couldn’t wear a competing brand. A lot of women wear other things. It’s pretty flexible. I haven’t heard of anyone losing their job because they wore heels to work.
