Don Carney and John Ross
Ages: 41 and 42
Occupations: Owners of Patch NYC
A lot of your jewelry and art is influenced by vintage pieces. Does any of that creep into the way that you dress? Carney: I guess it influences it, but I don't really wear vintage. Maybe some of my footwear is vintage-inspired footwear. Like grandpa shoes.
Is there anyone in your family who inspired the antique feel of your art and jewelry? Carney: No. I guess my father's mother had great taste in interiors. She liked antiques. A different style than what I like, but she had a great place. She had great personal style, too.
So does your house resemble your grandmother's house? Carney: No.
Do you find Boston to be a stylish city? Carney: Not especially. I guess I'm referring just to men. When it comes to women, there's more who really have a great sense of style. In Boston you see stylish people in certain areas. But in New York it's everywhere. I think men could probably be a little more creative with the way they dress. A little less conservative.
What are some of your stores in Boston? I only shop at Building 19. I'm kidding. This one stumps me. I suppose the original Filene's Basement was my favorite, and that's probably the place where I found the best things. I'm not a big shopper. I used to buy more quantity. Now I just buy a few nicer things. As far as shopping for inspiration for jewelry and art, I'd say antiquing in Maine is a big inspiration.
Whose style do you admire? Carney: John and I were talking about it this morning, and I think I would be more inspired by a woman, just because I think women take more chances. So I'd say Cher. Wait, don't put that in.
You have worked on store displays and mannequins, and I'm wondering if that affects the way that you put clothes together? Ross: I think it does because I probably think a lot about color and contrasting light and dark.
What's the inspiration for the jewelry that you design? Ross: I think I'm inspired by the vintage things that we find. They tell me where to go with what I'm making.
Would you say that you and Don are the best dressed people at the flea markets and thrift stores, or are there more stylish people there? Ross: Ah no. I wouldn't say that's the place to go in search of stylish people. At least not the ones we go to.
