The crew at Vogue Australia counted down the nine most expensive looks to walk the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards and the numbers are rather staggering.
Starting with penny-pinching Catherine Martin, the Oscar-winning costume designer and wife of “The Great Gatsby” director Baz Luhrmann, who showed up wearing a mere $442,000 (psssh) worth of gear. Her custom-made Prada gown rang in “around $25,000” and the $417,000 worth of Tiffany bling made up the rest of her pricetag.
For the most part, borrowed fine jewels accounted for most of the numbers surrounding the nine, but still, the cost of a couture gown, custom or runway, for one event is still blindsiding. For example, Charlize Theron, who clocked in at number two on the list, wore a Christian Dior haute couture gown that cost an estimated $90,000. Her colleague, Jessica Biel, walked in Chanel haute couture valued at $100,000.
Lupita Nyong’o’s insanely beautiful blue Prada gown was notably absent from the list, but we assume her conservative fine jewel choices — a simple Fred Leighton gold-and-diamond headband and matching earrings — kept her from making the cut.
Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett topped the list with $18 million of Chopard jewels and a $100,000 Armani Prive gown, which I suppose really sets the bar for the “in it to win it” attitude of nominees in years going forward.
Start saving your pennies, Lindsay Lohan. There’s hope for you yet.
