10 Drinks to Get You Excited for Fall

leaves.jpgNow that Labor Day has passed and the official first day of fall is fast approaching, it’s time to begin embracing the season -- and what better way to do that than with some seasonal cocktails and pumpkin beer?

Here are our top 10 drinks to sip once the leaves start falling.

  1. Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale. If you have never heard of this beer or given it a taste, it should be the first fall drink you try this upcoming season. Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale is perfect for fall weather and even better on draft, if you can get it. It’s a crisp, wheat ale with hints of pumpkin, cinnamon, and nutmeg -- refreshing to say the least. Be sure to try it with a cinnamon sugar rim. Similar: Shocktop Pumpkin Wheat Ale.
  2. Captain Morgan Spiced Rum and Apple Cider. Perfect for a cool fall night, Captain and apple cider go together almost as well as Captain and Coke. Mix 2 oz. of spiced rum with 8-10 oz. of cider, and serve either hot or cold. A very easy drink to make at home while cuddled up on the couch with a blanket or significant other.
  3. Bailey's Caramel Apple Martini. For those of you after a more upscale fall drink, look no further than this variation on the classic appletini. Using Bailey’s Caramel Irish Cream (1 oz.) and your chosen brand's green apple-flavored vodka (0.5-1 oz.), shake and pour into a martini glass. Garnish with a slice of apple and caramel, if you want to be really fancy.
  4. Cafe Godiva and Coffee. Godiva Liqueur has become prevalent in many bars around the city, and with flavors like mocha, milk chocolate, and white chocolate, there’s something for everyone. For this particular recipe, use mocha liqueur (2 oz.) and your favorite coffee (6 oz). It’s a great way to get that warm and fuzzy feeling while giving you a kick to start off the night (or the morning!) Add whipped cream if you’re feeling ambitious.
  5. Hot and Spiced Bourbon Cocktail. Combine 1.5 oz. of bourbon, 1 tsp. of fine sugar, 1-2 small cloves, and 1.5 oz. of boiling water. This spiced cocktail is the perfect end to a late dinner or paired with dessert.
  6. New Fashioned. A modern twist on the Old Fashioned. Use Crown Royal (1 oz.), amaretto (0.5 oz.), simple syrup (0.25 oz.), a dash of bitters, and a twist of orange. The amaretto gives it a new taste, one that is sure to please the up-and-coming fine drinker.
  7. Boston Black and Tan. Instead of using Bass and Guinness, try Sam Adams Brick Red and Guinness. Perfect for Bostonians and those looking for a new version of the classic beer combination.
  8. Cider and Tequila Hot Toddy. This one's best made at home due to the preparation time. Heat cranberry juice and cider in a saucepan, but make sure it doesn’t boil. Then, stir in tequila and either triple sec or orange-flavored liqueur. If you’re looking for a little extra spice, try cloves, cinnamon sticks, or nutmeg for a garnish.
  9. Woodchuck Cider. There is nothing new about this cider in a beer bottle, but it’s one of those drinks that never gets boring and is perfect for those who don’t quite love the taste of alcohol. It comes in Amber, Pear, and even Pumpkin, with other limited reserves throughout the year. For those looking for a gluten-free drink, this is your choice, since it’s always made from apples. Additionally, use Woodchuck in a Snakebite by combining it with your favorite lager.
  10. Oktoberfest Beers. Sam Adams Octoberfest is already out in numerous bars around the city and is a brew you must have at least once during the fall season. Looking for a variation on the Oktoberfest beer? Try Harpoon Octoberfest, Beck’s Oktoberfest, Brooklyn Oktoberfest, or Magic Hat Oktoberfest. There are countless others, so check your neighborhood grocery or liquor store. Also recommended: Sam Adams Cherry Wheat.
