After much cajoling from his kids, my son gave in and adopted a 6-year-old goofy golden retriever named Mason, and they all fell in love with this gentle animal. Mason does have one fault. He zips through an open door like a shot out of you know where. Our granddaughter Katherine would chase him through yards and fields to no avail, and this went on until her sister, Stephanie, worked some magic. She shouted, “Mason, let’s go for a walk,” and Mason was soon at her feet waiting for the leash. The magic words continue to retrieve Mason.

Employees Only On a recent visit back home to Boston, we went out to dinner with my brother, his wife, and their two sons, Brett, age 8, and Colin, age 7. The boys went to the restroom while we waited for our meal. When they returned, their mom asked if they had washed their hands. Colin quickly replied, “I’m not an employee!”
