Statement by bishop

By Associated Press, 1/24/1984

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The following is a statement by Bishop Bernard F. Law of Springfield-Cape Girardeau on being named archbishop of Boston:

"I am most grateful to the Holy Father for having appointed me archbishop of Boston. My thoughts are of those who have preceded me, particularly the late Cardinal Medeiros, whose sudden death was a shock to the whole Church; may the Lord grant me the holiness and wisdom necessary to effectively serve this great archdiocese as they did. "The gracious welcome already extended to me by Bishop Thomas Daily, the administrator of the archdiocese, is a source of encouragement and is most deeply appreciated. I will rely heavily upon his knowledge and pastoral skill in this important time of coming to know the priests, religious and laity of Boston.

"While the archdiocese is my primary responsibility, I look forward to working with the leaders of other Christian communities, Jewish religious leaders, and public officials of the Boston area as together we serve the common good.

"Between here and Boston, there is the difficult task of saying goodby to the diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, which it has been my joy to serve during these past 10 years. Both southern Missouri and Boston are in my prayers during these days of transition."
