Cool New Toys for Little Ones -- But Really For Yourself

Spring is here! Or rather was here. It seems to be taking a hiatus in New England at the moment. I did just wake up to a sheet of snow covering all the cars in the neighborhood this morning.

If you’ve had to bring the fun back inside, you’re probably hunting for some fun things to do other than Netflix. I’ve rounded up five cool toys that will delight the kids in the house, but also entertain the grown-ups -- even if the only kid around is your inner child!

1. Siege Toys Catapult ($40)

This nifty little miniature replica of a medieval siege engine is made from birch wood and assembles in 10 minutes. It’s suitable for children ages 12 and up, and that includes grown-ups. Don’t be shy in engaging office warfare or duking it out in a friendly fight with the kids! Did I mention you can catapult gummy bears?

2. Tait Design Co. Turbo Flyer ($18)

Bring on the model airplane memories from childhood! This easy-to-build and collectible balsa wood model airplane has a wingspan of 12” and can fly up to 50 feet. The fun is in the building of this toy and then letting this baby soar.

3. Gigamic Games Katamino ($32.95)

This game can be played alone or with opponents (big and small alike). You build perfect units called pentas by placing a certain number of pentaminos on the game board through twisting, flipping and turning different pieces to figure out how they fit into the puzzle area. Easy to learn, but layers of complexity make this game a classic.

4. Modern-twist Mark Mat ($25)

Looking for ways to distract the kids (or yourself) before mealtime? These eco-friendly coloring placemats are made of durable, food-grade silicone. They provide a clean, germ-free surface to not only eat on, but to doodle on with four non-toxic dry-erase markers. Kids shouldn’t have all the fun; you can have your own doodle mat, too!

5. Kidzaw Art Kits ($29.95)

Ever wanted to create a masterpiece? This kit includes everything you need to create 2 masterpieces as well as learning materials to deepen one’s understanding of the original painting. That means you can work on one and the little one can work on one. Or, you and a friend can compete to see who is the better artist!

What are some of your favorite indoor games? Share in the comments if you have one. If you don’t, pick up one of these cool toys for the next time you need to play indoors due to the snow or rain; they’re great for little ones or grownups who like to put their creative juices to play.
