Make Your Back-To-School Gear Pop with Color

For the mass of college students returning to school this fall, classes and textbooks may be on their minds, but that’s not all. It’s about making a mark in and out of the classroom; it’s about standing out from the huge body of students on campus. What better way to do so than to make a (bright) statement with back-to-school gear?

Of course, if you’re a student or a parent shopping for a student, make sure the basics are covered. If you’re coming to or staying in Boston, the two things you should buy is a warm coat and a sturdy pair of waterproof winter boots. Once you have those in your luggage, you can start thinking about customizing your student staples.

1. DecalGirl Skins (MacBook Pro 13” & 15”); $34.95

The original computer was the size of a room -- hardly portable. Then computers were mostly accessible only at libraries or school computer rooms. Nowadays, every student carries a laptop to class. With DecalGirl Skins, featuring one-of-a-kind artwork from American artists and designers, you can customize -- and protect -- your laptop as well as your charger. This way, your MacBook won’t get lost in a sea of computers.

2. DecalGirl Skins (iPhone 4/4s & 5 or Samsung Galaxy S3 & S4); $9.95

Let’s be honest; we’d be so lost without our smartphones. While it’s still somewhat taboo to take out a phone during a lecture (or even meeting), more often than not it’s not for disrespectful texting. We now use our phones to keep track of our busy school or work schedules, sometimes to take notes, and as a dictionary or calculator. Why not also give your phone a pop of color with an American-made premium automotive-grade cast vinyl decal?

3. Unitrex JAZZ TouchPen; $17.95

With the explosion of tablets as a household device, stylus tools have become popular. If you’re taking notes on your tablet in class, it’d be nice to also scribble on paper when necessary. The JAZZ TouchPen comes in bright colors and is both a pen and a stylus tool, which works on all touchscreen devices. Besides its handy dual function, it’s one less thing to keep track of.

4. ReFleece Fleece Tablet Sleeve (Medium); $29.95

If you’re looking to avoid the many similar tablet cases and sleeves that will be on campus, pick up a ReFleece. It’s made in the USA, totally created from recycled content, and made with sustainable practices. It comes in a few different colors for liners and its fleece texture will be sure to turn a few heads.

Are you or your college student heading back to school? What was on your shopping list? Let me know in the comments or on Twitter.
