Creative Care Packages for College

When I was a college student, I studied abroad in Ireland and interned at a Dublin ad agency. There was a great tradition where past employees would send in care packages full of candy and other treats from overseas. It was something I always looked forward to.

Care packages actually date back to the 40s. The first ever CARE package (distributed by the humanitarian organization Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere) was more practical than fun, containing such items as eight ounces of liver loaf, one pound of lard, and one pound of fruit preserves. With the new school year in session, many families of boarding school or college students are probably thinking about creative care packages.

While college students are never too far away from a dining hall or convenience store, a box of supplies and goodies is always a welcome gift -- although a pound of lard probably wouldn’t be appreciated. To give your college student a helpful boost during exams and homework, here’s a roundup of Grommets that you can mix and match for a fun and tasty care package:

Sweet Treats

Dancing Deer: From Our House to Your House Gift Medley ($39.95)

All-natural and homemade, these cookies and brownies come in a whimsically house-shaped box -- a sweet way to send a bit of home to your college student. What’s more is that these baked goods are made from scratch in the Dancing Deer bakery with many of the recipes originating from a co-founder’s own grandmother.

Ticket Kitchen: Hot Chocolate Service for 4 ($15)

Make the approaching winter months easier for your college student by sending over some blocks of fine Belgian couverture. Every Ticket Stick is handmade in a San Francisco chocolate kitchen. Just swirl one into a cup of steaming milk for a wonderfully creamy cup of hot chocolate.

Chococoa ($28)

These childhood delights are made from all natural, organic ingredients and come in traditional vanilla cream as well as raspberry, espresso, chocolate ganache, and seasonal flavors such as pumpkin with ginger. A blast from the past has never been so tasty (and made with local butter for the delicious trans fat-free buttercream, too).

Neat Toys

Kristins Gifts: WAFF Notebook & Alphabet Cubes (Starting at $18.95)

Silicone has become a recent favorite as a material for many items, but this one may take the cake yet. The WAFF notebook is made of silicone whose cover you can customize with alphabet pieces. Colorful and distinctive, it’ll stand out amongst all the spiral Five Star notebooks.

There’s always a party to be had on campus. Give the gift of music -- the gift of mixing music, specifically. This mobile DJ mixer allows two audio devices (mp3 player, iPhone, laptop, etc.) to manipulate their two music libraries while connected to a sound system. The first of its kind, the POKKETMIXER was the product of its two founders who started tinkering with handmade mixers in Berlin, Germany. Help bring the party to campus.

handcandy ($39.95)

It’s easy to just drop by the closest Apple store for a pair of white earphones, but nowadays, white earphones aren’t quite the statement piece they used to be. Allow your college student’s personality to shine through with earbuds that can be worn as a necklace, featuring beads fashioned out of wood, glass, and resin. A magnetic clasp comfortably secures the strands around the neck beads so rushing between classes won’t be a problem.
