Overall district ratings

The Boston Globe ranked districts by adding the percentage of students in the "advanced" and "proficient" categories for each of the 10 MCAS tests administered in 2003, and then finding the median of those 10 figures. For example, if 10 percent of third graders scored "advanced" in reading and 20 percent scored "proficient," the combined percentage would be 30 for that test. So if the 10 combined percentages for School District A were 10, 20, 30, 40, 49, 51, 60, 70, 80, 90, the district's median would be 50, the number that separates the top five from the bottom five. The tests are reading (grade 3), English (4, 7, 10), math (4, 6, 8, 10), and science (5, 8). Only school districts with all 10 tests are ranked, excluding most regional districts and charter schools.)
