For the second time in two years, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater will have to search for a new leader after the resignation of artistic director Dan Lombardo.
In a telephone interview Friday, Lombardo said the decision to leave his post was voluntary. “It was just time for me to move on, to work at other theater companies, to have personal time for my own writing, to spend more time with my wife,’’ he said.
“I’ve been with the company for nine years, and I had accomplished in the last two seasons some of the things I’d been wanting to do in theater my whole career,’’ he added. Before being appointed artistic director, Lombardo had served as the company’s dramaturg, and he was also the director of the WHAT Lab, which develops new plays.
Lombardo’s predecessor, longtime WHAT artistic director Jeff Zinn, stepped down in the fall of 2011, and Lombardo was named to succeed Zinn shortly thereafter. In a press release, WHAT executive director Jeffry George said: “We were saddened by Dan Lombardo’s recent decision to move on, but honor and support his wish to be close to his family after so many years of commuting from Western Massachusetts.’’
He added: “Dan’s spirit and passion will be with us as the organization, collectively, makes the artistic decisions while searching for a new Artistic Director over the next 12 months.’’
