Boston Globe Top Drives for 2012
310-hp supercharged V-6, 8-speed auto, AWD, EPA 18/28
The Audi A7 isnt any faster or better equipped than the midsize A6. It has one fewer seat belt and less headroom. But the swoopy hatch body is hotter than a dozen Marilyns in air-blown skirts. And like Ms. Monroe, the A7s sex appeal comes naturally with a premium price.
For $10,000 over an A6, you receive a retractable spoiler and frameless windows. Its an exotic shape that makes every other sedan look staid, even the Mercedes CLS, the car that started the four-door coupe craze in 2006. A little more cash nets a stunning set of 20-inch rims, wraps the interior in matte-finish wood, and blinds everyone with LED headlamps. Adding the navigation system brings Google Earth maps and superb handwriting recognition. It drives as any respectable German car should. Excellent.
The A6 shares most of these features, making the A7 a mere splurge. What else can we say? Some car buyers like it hot.
