More exotic transmissions
It used to be that manual gearboxes provided better fuel economy, but that's no longer true. Besides the continuously variable transmission adopted by Nissan, we're seeing seven, eight, and even nine-speed automatic transmissions. Some have twin clutches that act like manuals and are more efficient than regular automatics. To an older generation that grew up driving GM's two-speed Powerglide transmissions and fretting over expensive repairs for leaks and broken bands, these are engineering marvels.
