Legatt McCall Properties will buy the former Middlesex Courthouse in East Cambridge and turn it into an office and retail building, state officials announced Friday.
The Boston development firm had the winning bid among three companies that were competing to redevelop the 22-story buiding, according to officials with the state’s Division of Capital Asset Management. A sale price was not disclosed, as the parties have yet to negotiate a purchase and sale agreement.
The selection of Legatt McCall kick starts a long-awaited effort to redevelop the dilpaidated courthouse, which has been mostly empty since Middlesex Superior Court moved to Woburn in 2008. State officials estimated that it will take the company four years to rehabiliate the property and attract new tenants.
Legatt McCall is proposing to build retail stores at the base of the building and renovate the rest of the 595,000-square-foot building into offices. The company has not said when it will start construction.
The other bidders were HYM Investment Group of Boston and DivcoWest of San Francisco.
