Amazon buys robot maker Kiva for $775m
Deal for North Reading company is 2d-largest by online retailer
Amazon.com Inc. has agreed to buy robot maker Kiva Systems Inc. for $775 million, the online retailer said on Monday. Kiva makes robots that have been used to move merchandise in warehouses operated by some of the largest e-commerce companies in the world, including Gap, Staples Inc., and Office Depot. The squat robots can handle loads of 3,000 pounds and can work continuously, breaking only to recharge their batteries. Amazon operates distribution centers across the US and the world.
