A Newton law firm, Carp Law Offices LLC, has filed suit against Apple Inc. and AT&T Inc. over problems with the new iPhone 4’s antenna. The firm, representing an iPhone owner, is seeking an injunction to halt production of the iPhone 4 until Apple fixes defective phones it has already sold. Similar suits have been filed in California, Maryland, and New Jersey.

Apple says it sold 1.7 million of the phones in their first three days on the market. But many buyers complain the phone has a defective built-in antenna that can’t receive cellular signals when the user’s hand covers the phone’s bottom left corner.

Apple’s chief, Steve Jobs, has urged customers to alter the way they hold the phones.
