You might go to prison (but probably won't)
In extreme cases, tax evaders can wind up in prison. Actor Wesley Snipes, for example, was sentenced to three years in prison in 2008 for willful failure to file his federal tax return for five consecutive years.Such penalties are reserved for offenders who openly and deliberately flout the rules - or who are involved with fraud, such as making up returns for people who don't exist. To get prison time, there would have to be "intentional disregard of tax laws or not paying taxes for a number of years," Riley said. "You won't go to prison for making an innocent mistake."
