A new survey from Vertical Response, an online marketing provider, recently took a look at small businesses and their use of social media. While the basic findings like Facebook still being the No. 1 platform, and time being an issue were not surprising, some things did stand out to me. As I've mentioned in the past, social is something small business owners should embark on carefully, and consider the time investment before jumping in.
The statistics in this survey that I found of interest included:
- Nearly 60% of small businesses spend more than $26 a month for tools that help them publish social media updates: Given the majority of social tools are free, this was a bit shocking.
- 55% of small businesses have a blog: I'd be interested to see how often they are updated or what information is being shared, but to be over the 50% threshold is a big milestone for small businesses.
- 70% are on Twitter: again, being "on Twitter" can mean many things, and the vast majority post once a day (at most) or several times a week. What this shows is that many are signing up and checking it out, but few are actually using it as a marketing channel.
The survey was conducted with small businesses under 100 employees (93% of respondents fell into this category) and 43% were the owners/CEOs/sole proprietors as well. The full infographic is below.
