Known for its beautiful beaches, St. Pete grew at the end of the 19th century on the peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Old, stately buildings remain. In times past, the faded milieu and large elderly population gave the town a weary feel -- "God's waiting room," some wags labeled it. A revival has been under way, however.
