Panama has been attracting retirees for years, due to the vast amount of benefits and discounts it offers for those on Social Security. The currency is tied to the American dollar, for one. Some discounts include 20 to 50 percent discounts on air, bus, and train fares, a fun night out at the movies or at a concert, and for your well-being on hospital bills and medical consultations. Boquete, which is an hour flight from Panama City, is more rural, but offers a great environment amid rain forests and coffee plantations to not only relax, but to start a new life. Many have come to the town to start a farm, or to set up life in a gated community. One can live comfortably in Boquete for $20,000 a year.
