Huffington touts the value of sleep

Arianna Huffington spoke at the Boston Chamber of Commerce CEO breakfast Thursday morning at the Fairmont Copley Hotel about the benefits of sleep for an individual and business.

In 2007, the president and editor in chief of the Huffington Post Media Group collapsed from exhaustion, breaking her cheekbone. She then decided to live a healthier lifestyle, inspiring her new book, “Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder.”

“By any sane definition of success, if you’re lying in a pool of blood, you are not successful,” she said, jokingly.

Huffington told the 500 attendees from various businesses around the Boston area that an individual cannot function and make decisions while tired. She said creativity and good decision making can only happen if well rested. She also talked about the importance of silencing smartphones and other technological distractions while sleeping.

At the Huffington Post office in New York, she said, there is a nap room that is used often and a policy where e-mails must stop once an employee leaves the office.

Huffington created the Huffington Post in 2005, been named one of Forbes Most Powerful Women, and has written 14 books. She said by traditional standards, in terms of money and power, she is successful. But, the true measure of success is a third metric of rest, wisdom, and wonder.

“If we only value money, we are never going to have enough,” Huffington said. “If we only value fame or power, we will always feel like we are lacking something. By integrating this third metric, we can live a life of purpose and meaning.”
