Early January is that time of year when folks attempt to trim up their racing lines and vow to down-size their paunches and sitzfleisch. During this period of good intentions, even Dunkin’ Donuts is on a health kick of sorts.
Think health foods, and Dunkin’, a Canton-based chain generally known for coffee and baked goods, does not immediately spring to mind. Indeed, one could argue that the donut is an ideal empty-calorie delivery system. (And who can forget last year’s doughnut sandwich?)
But as it looks to cater to a wide range of tastes, Dunkin’ said it is starting the new year by expanding its DDSMART menu, which is described as offering “better-for-you choices.”
One such offering is the Sliced Turkey Breakfast Sandwich, which includes an egg and reduced fat cheddar cheese served up on multigrain flatbread. According to Dunkin’, this entree clocks in at 310 calories.
There is an even lighter variation of this theme. The 160-calorie Wake-Up Wrap is served with egg, cheese, and one slice of turkey on a warmed tortilla.
Health-conscious patrons can also opt to use reduced fat cream cheese spreads on their bagels.
‘‘We know that our guests are increasingly health-conscious, and are looking for a full selection of choices that satisfy their hunger and fit into their lifestyle,’’ John Costello, president of global marketing and innovation at Dunkin’ Brands, said in a statement. ‘‘Ever since we launched our DDSMART menu more than five years ago, we have been steadily expanding our better-for-you offerings. We are pleased to begin the New Year with new and unique DDSMART items like the Sliced Turkey Breakfast Sandwich, and we look forward to continuing to explore ways to meet the needs of our guests and provide even more options throughout 2014.’’
