Baskin-Robbins ‘Big Thaw’ contest looks to bring back an ice cream flavor of yore

In its nearly 70 years of brand history, Baskin-Robbins has amassed a huge “library” of more than 1,300 ice cream flavors, many of them now “retired” to the frozen dessert archives. And now the Canton-based chain is asking customers if one of these flavors should be brought of cold storage and offered once again to the ice cream-eating public.

To that end, Baskin-Robbins is launching “The Big Thaw” online voting contest, which gives folks the chance to choose from a selection of 31 retired Baskin-Robbins ice cream creations.

Through Oct. 10, fans can visit the Baskin-Robbins Facebook page to vote for their favorite. The winning flavor will be brought back from the “Deep Freeze” and will be available for a limited time in 2014 in ready-made quarts at participating shops nationwide, said Baskin-Robbins, which shares a corporate parent with Dunkin’ Donuts.

Voters will receive a coupon for a Buy One Cone, Get One Free coupon.

If nothing else, a perusal of some of the flavors on the Big Thaw ballot suggests that Baskin-Robbins R&D folks are a most adventurous lot.

Your average food scientist might have been deterred by the prospect of reimagining the French Toast breakfast as an ice cream sundae, but such an assignment did not dismay the Baskin-Robbins team. And when it came to alchemizing key lime pie or the Fluffernut sandwich into ice cream flavors, Baskin-Robbins researchers were once again equal to the task.

Other entries on the ballot include Boston Cream Pie, Lunar Cheesecake, and Root Beer Float, which features “root beer sorbet.” (Could a French foodie fail to fall in love with root beer sorbet?)
