In new Boston office, IdeaPaint finally looks like one of its own clients

IdeaPaint products are popular among businesses with collaborative work environments — you know, the kinds of places where people hold meetings on sofas and scribble the fruits of their brainstorming sessions on the nearest wall. Finally, the 12-year-old company looks like one of its own clients.

I toured the new IdeaPaint office at 40 Broad Street in Boston this week. Or perhaps I should say I toured the new IdeaPaint showroom.

Gone are the cube farm and private offices that separated workers at the old headquarters in Ashland. The first-floor workspace is open and bright, with 5,000 square feet of wall space covered in the company’s signature dry erase paint.

There’s a central kitchen area known as the hive (I think someone else uses that name), which is fitting, since the hexagonal pattern on the carpet resembles that of a honeycomb.

The bottom line is IdeaPaint’s space is now a model that prospective clients actually might want to follow.

“At the end of the day, what we really sell is a technology that can lead to innovation and collaboration, so it’s important for us to have that same experience,” said senior vice president Jeff Chaitman.

IdeaPaint already has hosted one of its new neighbors, an architectural firm, for a wine and cheese event in the new digs. The plan is to host similar events to show how its products look in a real work setting.

Now that the existing team of 32 is settling in, IdeaPaint is looking to add six or seven new employees by the end of the second quarter. Hiring should be easier than ever, Chaitman said, with a more enticing workspace.

“I think it’s going to help us attract and retain a higher caliber of employee,” he said.
