Calling designers of all kinds — architects, crafters, interior designers and the rest. You’re wanted to help stage the inaugural Boston Design Week March 20-30.
The 11-day festival is meant to showcase the city’s creative side, with heavy hitters like the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Society of Architects, and Wentworth Institute of Technology already signed up as sponsors.
The American Society of Interior Designers will kick things off with its annual awards gala at the Mandarin Oriental hotel. The seventh annual Art & Design of the 20th and 21st Centuries show will close out the festivities with a four-day exhibition at the Cyclorama at the Boston Center for the Arts.
Between those bookends, the itinerary needs filling. So organizer Fusco & Four, an artsy marketing agency that has put on the Boston International Fine Art Show for 17 years, is soliciting event proposals to round it out. The goal is to compile an array of smaller-scale events — open houses, film screenings, contests, lectures and more.
“We’ve been talking about putting on this festival for several years now,” said Tony Fusco, director of Fusco & Four. “Every designer and design organization we have spoken with was emphatic. This was something that they wanted. This was something that they felt Boston was missing. So we are working with them to make it a reality.”
Event proposals can be submitted online until Jan. 31, and a full schedule is expected by early February. Participation fees range from $100 to $1,000, with young businesses and sole proprietors on the low end.
“We have already received numerous unsolicited inquiries from potential participants as word of Boston Design Week has spread,” Fusco said. “Our goal is not only to showcase the wealth of design and creative industries we have in the Boston area, but also to facilitate participation from national and international designers and design-related companies.”
