Hailo, a company that uses smartphones to dispatch cabs in Boston, said its taxi-cab data show that pennant fever truly gripped the Hub last month --- and that locals were excited by the Patriots and Bruins as well.
Because most smartphones are equipped with GPS devices that can pinpoint locations, smartphone taxi apps can churn out data that can map popular destinations.
According to the company, data it gathered for its Hailo Taxi Meter analysis revealed that the areas known for their sports bars were more requested for cab drop-offs than any other place in Boston on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights in September.
Popular destinations included the neighborhood around Fenway Park and a stretch of Boylston Street where bars with large screen TVs are chock-a-block.
“This data is a compelling look at where Bostonians are spending their nights out and about,” Vanessa Kafka, general manager of Hailo Boston, said in a statement. “Everyone knows that Bostonians are incredibly proud of their sports teams and track them closely. That pride, combined with the return of Boston’s student population, definitely meant plenty of business for our sports bars.”
Launched in 2011, Hailo is available in several cities including London, New York, Dublin, Chicago, and Washington, D.C.
Hailo said it has raised more than $50 million from investors. One investor is Sir Richard Branson, the billionaire chairman of the Virgin Group.
