Zipcar Inc., the Boston-based vehicle-sharing network that is now a subsidiary of Avis Budget Group Inc., said that Detroit has become its 25th major metropolitan market.
The Detroit Zipcar fleet of 40 vehicles will include Ford Focus models.
Besides densely populated cities, college campuses are a big market for Zipcar. In 2011, Ford Motor Co. became Zipcar’s largest university vehicle partner, Zipcar said in a press release.
“Bringing car sharing to a city made by cars and built for cars is a huge accomplishment for Zipcar,” Zipcar president Mark Norman said in a statement. “We are thrilled to be able to offer another mode of simple and convenient transportation to residents, students and businesses in Detroit as Zipcar expands our presence into our milestone 25th major metro market.”
Zipcar is currently in markets in the US, Canada, the UK, Spain, and Austria. Zipcars are also deployed at 22 airports and at more than 300 college campuses. The Zipcar fleet is made up of more than 10,000 vehicles available in over 30 makes and models.
