Even as it awaits a state panel’s decision on a $9.5 million tax credit, e-health records vendor athenahealth Inc. is hard at work on a “master plan” for its Watertown headquarters complex, the Arsenal on the Charles, which it recently purchased from Harvard University.
Athenahealth expects to unveil its plan for the 11-building, 760,000-square-foot complex some time in the next few months. It currently occupies 220,000 square feet in all of one building and part of another, but it will be taking space in a third building this fall and will account for 290,000 square feet of space by the end of the year, said spokeswoman Holly Spring.
While athenahealth is the largest player at the Arsenal on the Charles, it has plenty of company. There are currently 20 tenants, ranging from Harvard Business Publishing to the New Repertory Theatre, including several high-tech companies and restaurants. But as it grows—athenahealth is promising to add 1,900 jobs to its nearly 1,100-person workforce in Watertown over the coming decade—the electronic medical records firm will take more space.
It also plans to add more community amenities to a complex that built cannons for Navy warships in the early 19th century. But the details remain under wraps.
“We have big plans for this campus and want to turn it into a bigger part of Watertown,” said Dan Haley, athenahealth’s vice president for government and regulatory affairs. “Our CEO, Jonathan Bush, feels very strongly that he wants the property to feel like it’s a place where our employees can live, work, and play.”
