New England Baptist Hospital in Boston yesterday said its board of trustees has appointed a new president and chief executive, Patricia L. Hannon, who is currently senior vice president for health care operations at Baystate Health in Springfield.

Hannon, who is also chief operating officer at Baystate Medical Center, will start her job at New England Baptist on Nov. 2.

Established in 1893, New England Baptist Hospital, which is located in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, has about 140 beds and specializes in orthopedic surgery: primarily joint replacement and spine surgery. It is the official hospital of the Boston Celtics and has provided services to US Olympic teams and other athletes. It performs about 13,000 orthopedic surgeries annually.

The hospital’s previous chief executive, Joseph D. Dionisio, resigned in August 2008 for “personal reasons’’ that weren’t disclosed. Helen R. Strieder, former chairwoman of the board of trustees, has been serving as interim chief executive.

Hannon has worked in health care administration for more than 25 years.

She received her undergraduate education in nursing from Marymount University and holds an MBA from the New York Institute of Technology.
