Sagendorph died of cancer on July 4, 1970. On his death bed, he appointed Jud Hale editor and Trowbridge publisher. "But don't grow the company any more, boys," he reportedly said. "The plumbing won't take it."
Under Hale and Trowbridge, the magazine switched to color printing in its internal pages, and circulation reached 800,000 in 1979.
