L.L. Bean in transition
L.L. Bean store in Freeport, Maine
In the next five years, outdoor retailer L.L. Bean plans to expand its successful catalogue business into brick-and-mortar stores around the country. The company hopes to learn from mistakes made several years ago, when its first retail stores opened with merchandising woes and labeling confusion. "We thought, based on our experience in Freeport, we knew retail," L.L. Bean Chief Executive Chris McCormick said. "We didn't know retail."
